About Us:

PLSP is For Fathers, Too:

PLSP is not just for mothers; it is most certainly for fathers, too. One of the ways that men tend to respond to loss is by attempting to prove to their partner that they are strong, and to admit a need for counseling might be seen as undermining that effort. Yet experience has shown that by not addressing their own emotional needs fathers can do significant damage to their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of the relationship. If you are a father who is unsure about joining his partner in the pregnancy loss support process, we have male volunteers who are happy to confidentially answer any questions.

Subsequent Support:

Nationwide telephone support for those who are pregnant after a loss, as well as for adoption after a loss, is available.
Professional Referrals:

Our licensed social worker can make
referrals to selected psychotherapists in the New York metropolitan area.

You Are Not Alone:

PLSP is about more than counseling; it is about creating a safe space where parents can talk about their loss openly, honestly and without fear of being ignored, shunned or disrespected. Every PLSP volunteer suffered their own pregnancy loss—we’ve been there, too. We’ve discovered just how powerful it can be to talk to someone who understands, to be in a group with parents who “speak your language.” The friendships forged within support groups are an ongoing source of strength—friendships that often last for years and years.

Telephone Counseling:

PLSP is guided by a licensed social worker with extensive experience in pregnancy loss. Our professionally trained volunteers, who participated in our program following their own pregnancy losses, provide personal and prompt nationwide telephone counseling for men and women. Both male and female volunteers are available.

Support Groups:

Following telephone counseling, bereaved parents in the New York metropolitan area may join our support groups, which are facilitated by two trained volunteers who themselves have suffered a pregnancy loss. The sessions consist of the same small group of participants who gather for six weekly evening meetings. At each meeting, a brief presentation is followed by an open discussion guided by the facilitators. Topics include:

  • coping with grief

  • the responses of family, friends, clergy, and the medical community to the loss

  • the impact a loss might have on the couple’s relationship

  • dealing with anger, jealousy and guilt

  • facing another pregnancy
